The musical collaboration of the decade, Raising Sand is
the sound of two iconic figures stepping out of their
respective comfort zones and letting their instincts lead
them across a brave new sonic landscape. Despite hailing
from distinctly different backgrounds, Alison Krauss and
Robert Plant share a maverick spirit and willingness to
extend the boundaries of their respective genres. This
spirit, expertly honed by producer T Bone Burnett, has
resulted in an album pitched three steps beyond some cosmic
collision of early urban blues, spacious West Texas country,
and the untapped potential of the folk-rock revolution.
Supported by the unparalleled musicianship of Marc Ribot,
Dennis Crouch, Mike Seeger, Jay Bellerose, Norman Blake,
Greg Leisz, Patrick Warren, and Riley Baugus, Plant and Krauss -
as both solo and harmony vocalists - tackle an intriguing
selection of songs from such tunesmiths as Tom Waits, Gene
Clark, Sam Phillips, Townes Van Zandt, The Everly Brothers,
and Mel Tillis. Raising Sand finds Robert Plant and Alison
Krauss exploring popular musics elemental roots while still
sounding effortlessly, breath-takingly contemporary.

From a few years back, I know. But I love this CD. All instrumental, Robert Randolph's big debut onto the scene. Medeski with the Allstars is kickass, too.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Sweet surrender's always been the subtext of gospel music, but the velvet punch of this superstar jam band will knock out secular audiences as well. The Word features John Medeski of Medeski, Martin and Wood and youngblood trio the North Mississippi Allstars, but its star is Robert Randolph, a 23-year-old from New Jersey who is the new god of pedal-steel guitar. Randolph earned his chops in the Pentecostal church, performing the so-called "Sacred Steel" music well documented by the Arhoolie label (see Sacred Steel, Vol. 2 for a sample). He plays like an amalgamation of Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, John Coltrane, Buddy Emmons, Bo Diddley, and Mahalia Jackson. In short, he's brilliant, so full of rock & roll energy, improvisational fire, and sonic acrobatics that the other great musicians on this disc mostly stay out of his way. Randolph has a seemingly divine gift for on-the-fly harmony as he splits the difference between Sunday tent meetings and Saturday juke crawls on "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed & Burning." In the Allman Brothers-style jams, Randolph plays both Dickey Betts and Duane to Medeski's organ, handling sweet, clean scales and rich, mellow slide slurs. But his vocabulary extends well beyond American-roots music. "Blood on That Rock" ends in a free-improv meltdown, and elsewhere his snaky lines sound like Middle Eastern holy singing. All of which makes The Word worth heeding. --Ted Drozdowski

You've heard Jeff ribb me about my Mike Doughty obsession. Well, he is my favorite singer / songwriter right now and my buddy. Love his stuff. Not your typical jamband fare, but I love it all the same. Give one of these a try. The live one is solo acoustic, as is Skittish and Rockitty Roll. Live at WBER were during interviews with yours truly. Haughty Melodic is a studio album with full band. This is his entire catalog to date since he;s been solo. He used to be in a band called Soul Coughing that was big in the 90s on alternative stations. I reccomend Haughty Melodic first, then the rest as they are listed.

edit: Live @ Bonnaroo 2006 added with FULL BAND! AWESOME!
also added: rare EP: The Mystery Trees, Live at Bonnaroo 2004

Particle
Self Titled EP

DOWNLOAD

1. Elevator (6:02)
2. Kneeknocker (10:42)
3. Road's a Breeze (at 3am) (6:09)
4. Ed & Molly (16:29)

This was Particle's first (studio) EP. They came to me at Milestones a few years back fresh, young and eager. I spent the day with these dudes already in love with their tunes and extremely versed in their aud recordings of shows out west. I revealed this to Steve, the keys player, and he let me write their setlist that night. One of the greatest thrills of producing concerts of my life.

I knew they played a cover of "Axel F", more commonly known as the Beverly Hills Cop theme song. I put it in the setlist for the night at Milestones and when they started it... I abandoned the door (where I was supposed to be working and charging admission) to go directly to the front row and dance my ass off for 10 minutes. Then back to work.

Particle lost a band member or two... replaced them and released a double live album last year. If I find it in my archives, I'll upload it for ya'll. Since that release, I haven't heard boo from them. I love my Particle, that day in my life and this genre in general.

Download this link and save it for when you have an overnight drive. Put it on when you are getting tired behind the wheel and you'll do what I call the "drive'n'Dance"

Pete

Phish: Headphones Jam

DOWNLOAD

The Headphones Jam (also referred to as "Monitor Jam") was recorded near the beginning of the Undermind sessions after Producer Tchad Blake arrived in Vermont and before the band began tracking most of the songs. It was mixed on the fly in The Barn and named because it was recorded while the monitors (in this case headphones) settings were dialed in for the session. Two tracks from the Headphones Jam were used for the Undermind album: "Maggie's Revenge" and "Tiny" (an Undermind iTunes bonus track). A third segment of the jam was played on a 2004 From the Archives radio show on The Bunny. The rest of the complete jam had never been heard outside the band until the Barn Tour Contest in 2006.

The Jam was presented in November 2006 to the winner of the Phish / Sirius "Live In Brooklyn" Barn Tour Contest along with a guided tour of The Barn and autographed copy of "Live in Brooklyn". The contest winner was given the option to hold onto the contest track or share it with the rest of the community. The winner decided to make this jam available to the public and asked LivePhish.com to help distribute it with the request that proceeds be donated to a designated charity. In that sense, it follows in the charitable tradition of other LivePhish.com efforts like "New Orleans Relief" and support of the Mockingbird Foundation.

From Amazon.com:

It's no secret that Franco-American relations have been strained in recent years, but French filmmaker Klaus Tontine and New Orleans-based progressives Garage a Trois have little interest in wasting time on the perceived diplomatic stature of one nation compared to another. In that transcendent space where jazz and the cinematic arts come together, size is nothing more than a state of mind. Garage a Trois--vibraphonist/percussionist Mike Dillon, guitarist Charlie Hunter, drummer Stanton Moore, and saxophonist Skerik--have crafted a brilliant soundtrack to Tontine's Outre Mer, an understated cinematic masterpiece that spans the lifetime of a brave but solitary figure and subtly illuminates the alternating joys and sorrows of isolation, parental devotion, romantic love and other universal themes that reach out to every shore.

Producer/director Klaus Tontine, a longtime fan of GAT's eclectic, cosmopolitan approach to jazz, funk and other styles, first approached the quartet in the summer of 2004, when the film--still just an idea in his head--had yet to be lensed. GAT completely embraced the concept, and crafted a compelling musical backdrop to the poignant story of Etienne de Nerval, a young man coming of age in rural France who is ostracized from society due to his diminutive stature. Reaching a maximum of only four feet, he commits every ounce of creative, intellectual and emotional energy to finding the one place in the world where he can be accepted and loved for who he is. Garage a Trois' soundtrack weaves a brilliant tapestry on a par with Tontine's stirring cinematic imagery. Like the film's resourceful protagonist, the four players aim every ounce of their own individual and collective energies at creative excellence. The resulting recording--which synthesizes a variety of world music sensibilities--never falls short.

How about some afrobeat dance?

Image

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra-"Who Is This America?"
As a hard-hitting Afro-beat orchestra that embellishes vintage Fela-style grooves with touches of gritty funk and fiery salsa, Antibalas quickly won over a sizable local audience in New York City with its sweaty live shows and relentlessly danceable rhythms. But while the band's past two efforts sounded fresh amidst a landscape of retro-rock cool, the discs never measured up to the band's galvanizing live show: Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1 was a piecemeal effort of live and studio material; Talkatif was woefully short. Now on Who Is This America, the band constructs a great-sounding 70-minute studio effort where the seven songs are skillfully woven together, not because they all sound like one long Afro-beat song, but because there is imaginative arrangements and tasty musicianship. Here multiple percussion players are the launch pad and the funky horn charts ignite liftoff whether it's the tightly wound "Indictment" or the slowly building "Sister." Undoubtedly the band's finest work to date. --Tad Hendrickson

anyone ever heard of this before?

someone on PT uploaded it
http://www.mediafire.com/?9r2mhd2mt99

http://www.phantasytour.com/phish/board ... 749&page=1

this is what the guy on PT said:
"Kimock used to crash at a recording studio in Nor Cal, Studio E...at some point he made what was called the "Late Night Raga" tape...an hour long solo tape of Indian-flavored guitar excursions...he gave many of his friends copies of the tape, but asked that they not copy the tape...to this day, no one really talks about it...in the days of snail mail trades, some Kimock fans would gift the raga disc with instructions not to talk about it openly, but to pass it on! I've done my part through the years!"
